The Nockalm Road in Kärnten (Carinthia)

The Nockalm Road, or to be more precise, the Nockalm High Alpine Road, offers bikers an exceptional experience in the middle of Europe. Between the Nock Mountains, Mallnock, Koflernock and Plattnock, weaves a 35 km long road with lots of sweeping curves for the biker to enjoy. This road can be used as part of a one day or even a two day tour.

The Nockalm Road is a toll road and the 35 km long road is full of sweeping curves and bends. The reason for this is that this beautiful high alpine road leads through the middle of the Nockalm National Park. The Nock Mountains reach a height of up to 2,400 m and display the largest array of Larch and Pine trees of the Eastern Alps.

The first leg of the tour starts from Berchtesgaden and takes the biker through the village of Oberau over the Dürnberg down into Hallein. From Hallein the road runs parallel to the motorway (for those without a Vignette (Motorway Pass) or one can take the motorway to Radstadt. From Radstadt the road leads past Obertauern to Mauterndorf then follow the signs to Katschberg. The road from Rennweg am Katschberg takes the biker to Innerkrems.

The homely tourist village of Innerkrems used to be a late medieval mining hamlet and is now the site of the north toll booth for the Nochalm Road. This is the start of a wondrous stretch of road for motorbikes with a total of 52 curves / bends and 35 km’s of fun. Firstly the road leads up to the Eisentalhütte at 2,042 m it is the highest point of the Nockalm Road. The Guest house here offers typical Carinthian fares, special motorbike parking and a viewing point with descriptions of the Nock Mountains and the surrounding area.

The fun continues on down to 1,693 m to Karlbad. Karlbad is a Health Spa that practises its healing methods from the 19 hundreds. Why not try it out.

Back on the bike and away we go. The next prominent point on the Nockalm Road is the “Schiestlscharte”. The high pass at “Schiestlscharte” stands at an altitude of 2,024 m and offers special parking for motorbikes. Another 9 km of winding road takes the biker down to Ebene Reichenau at 1,060 m. Just before the southern toll booth most bikers take the opportunity for a second or third trip on the Nockalm Road before carrying on with the tour. After leaving Ebene Reichenau bikers have the choice of riding to Bad Kirchenheim or back onto the motorway.
