Bicycle and Mountain bike tours in Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgadener Land offers various biking tours.
Listed below is a selection of biking tours. The ideal bikes for these tours are bikes with on and off road tyres.

1. Berchtesgaden High Tour

Characteristics:
A steep climb, only for experienced cyclists, leads the cyclists to the Obersalzberg (above the Salt Mountain) and along the enjoyable Salzwandweg (Salt wall way).

Starting Point 1:
Parking lot at the Rodlerhalle (Bob hall) – Watzmann Therme (Spa pools)
Drive past the Watzmann Therme to the Ice Skating Rink. Parking is, at this time, free. The parking lot is used as a starting point for many cycling tours.
Cycle past the Ice rink to where the footpath leads up to the Obersalzberg.
The path to the Obersalzberg is continuous uphill climb and is recommended for cyclists in a very good physical condition. The end of the path ends directly on the Obersalzberg road at circa 1600 m.  The Documentation Centre Parking lot is an ideal starting point for those who are not too physically fit.
From here the cyclist cycles to the left towards the Rossfeld Höhenringstraße (High ring road). Follow the road up the Rossfeld past the toll booth, cyclist don’t pay a toll fee, to the sign 1060 m. Here a road leads off to the right towards Kehlstein/Scharitzkehlalm/Vorderbrand. After a few hundred meters the way crosses over the Eagles Nest road (Kehlsteinstrasse) and carries on to a smaller tarred path.  The cyclist reaches a crossing of paths, follow the sign towards Scharitzkehlalm Vorderbrand. After a few kilometres the cyclist reaches another crossing of paths. The left path takes the cyclist up to the Eagles Nest road (not allowed for cyclists) and the right path towards the Scharitzkehlalm. The Ligerettalm (Ligarett pasture is only a few meters down this path. At the end of the descent, at the foot of the mountain Höher Göll, lies the Scharitzkehlalm. Cross country skiing is practised here in the winter. The cyclist then takes the Sandweg onto the Obersalzberg road. Take a left and follow the road to the Hinterbrand parking lot. From here the road veers off to the right and takes the cyclist back down towards Berchtesgaden train station. At the roundabout take the exit towards Salzburg and after a couple of kilometres the Watzmann Therme and your car.
For those not wishing to take the road from the train station to the Watzmann Therme there is a second option. Just before the roundabout behind the Schwabenkino there is a path that takes the cyclist along the river to the Ice Stadium and Watzmann Therme.

2. Biking Tour from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg

The starting point for this tour is the train station in Berchtesgaden. Cycle around the roundabout taking the exit Königssee, after taking the exit go left behind the Schwabenkino and follow the road past the Hotel Grünberger. The road then becomes a path that takes the cyclist along the river towards the Obersalzberg Cable Car and the Ice Stadium. Continue on the road until the Watzmann Therme then take the road to the right towards the Salt Mines (Salzbergwerk). After the Salt Mines the cyclist passes the Red Cross Station where he/she takes the path to the right along the river towards Unterau. At Unterau there is a small bridge that leads into the Industrial Estate, follow this path all the way to Marktschellenberg. From Marktschellenberg it’s a 2 km ride on the main road to the outskirts of Salzburg, St. Leonard. From here the cyclist has the choice of carrying on to Salzburg or going to Grödig and taking a ride around the mountain Untersberg.

3. Berchtesgaden train station to the Gotzenalm

Characteristics:
We advise only those experienced and in very good physical condition to take the route from the Berchtesgaden train station. For those not so experienced or physically fit we recommend starting from the Hinterbrand parking lot.
The Gotzenalm, isone of the most beautiful mountain bike tours in Berchtesgaden. The Gotzenalm Tour is approx. 35km long and ascends to an altitude of 1700 m and depending on physical condition takes between 3, 5 to 5, 5 hours. The first leg of the tour is from the train station around the roundabout taking the exit, Königssee, after circa 500 m at the traffic lights take a left and follow the road, Vordebrandstraße, up the steep incline past the Guest House Vorderbrand up to the Hinterbrand.  At the Hinterbrand parking lot the cyclist takes the path, Forststrasße.
Warning: the path leading to the middle station Jenner is not permitted by cyclists.

The Forststraße takes the cyclist below the middle station Jenner towards Königsbach (Kings’ Brook). Parallel to the Königsbach is the path for the mountain bike tour to Königsbachalm (Kings’ Brook pasture). Once past the Königsbachalm the cyclist takes the path towards the Gotzenalm. This path is relatively easy and allows the cyclist to recuperate before the final long climb to the Gotzenalm. Again a good physical condition is required for this last leg to the Gotzenalm. At the top of the Gotzenalm reward oneself with a cold Bavarian litre beer and lose yourself in the wonderful mountain view of the Königssee and the Watzmann.

The tour times are dependant on the physical condition of the cyclist and should only be used as a rough estimate.

4. Ramsau to the Litzelam, Salzburgerland

Characteristics:
A wonderful cycling tour through the Klausbachtal in Ramsau, a difficult incline takes the cyclist over and down into the Bindalm. The best starting point is the parking lot at the Lake Hintersee.
Starting point:
The Hintersee parking lot is park and pay. It is not a free parking lot. Cyclist must first walk their bikes through the gate to the National park house. From the National Park house the cyclist can ride his/her bike up into the Klausbachtal and the animal feeding grounds.
For more information about the Klausbachtal
The road takes the cyclist past the animal feeding grounds and after circa 1 km the road rises up towards the Bindalm. This stretch of road to the animal feeding grounds is also ideal for inline skaters. Just after the steep slope Nature shows the cyclist the true splendour of the Bavarian Alps and the stone gullies reveal the true force of the elements exerted on the mountains. From there on the way gets easier for the cyclist. When reaching the Bindalm the Almkaser, to the left, offers refreshing Bavarian light meals. A refreshingly barefoot paddle in the Klausbach can do the body wonders too and prepares the cyclist for the next rise up towards Hirschbichl. From the Bindalm the cyclist rides alongside undisturbed mountain pastures. The upkeep of these pastures and mountain huts is thanks to the Berchtesgadener alpine farmers.  Now begins the last stretch up towards the Hirschbichl. Just before the top of the pass to the right one can see the Klause, the Klause is a river dam that was first opened a few hundred years ago, it used to use the flowing water to transport logs, down to the Salt works at the train station Berchtesgaden to the sluicing area (Trifftplatz or Holz Schwemmen). At the Hirschbichl the cyclist crosses over from Bavaria, Germany into Salzburger Land, Austria. From here it’s a straight downhill route into Weißbach near Lofer, the way to the right takes the cyclist to wards Litzelalm. The route to Litzelalm, depending on physical condition, can take up to a ½ hour.
