The Kehlstein – The Kehlstein House (Eagles Nest)
High above Berchtesgaden with its Historical Background stands The Eagles Nest, Berchtesgaden´s most favoured Tourist Attraction. This statement doesn´t give the Kehlstein Mountain enough praise, those who walk up to the summit from Ofener Boden or over the Schritzkehl experience the true beauty of the Mountain. As one climbs up over the Sappensteig, the Kehlstein Mountain rewards its climber with a spectacular panoramic view of the Jenner, Königssee (Kings Lake), Watzmann Mountain and the Hochkalter Mountain. This route is only for Experienced Mountain Walkers, those not so experienced should take the Ofener Boden route.
Mountain Tour of the Kehlstein Mountain
Drive your car to the Rossfeld Private Road Toll Booth, either by the Obersalzberg Road, or via the village of Oberau, and then to the Ofener Boden Starting Point. You can also reach this point via the Obersalzberg cable Care from Berchtesgaden to the approx.1000m Obersalzberg and then walk, circa 30 mins. to the Rossfeld Toll Booth. Just below the Rossfeld Toll Booth you will find a Parking Area, this is one of several parking areas that allow you to walk up to the Ofener Boden Starting Point. The Parking Area at the Ofener Boden is usually full, so parking below at the Toll Booth will save you some money and aggravation of not finding a Parking place at the Ofener Boden. The Ofener Boden path takes you along an even level path before gradually rising to the steep serpentine path to the RVO Bus Turning point at the Eagles Nest base. From here you will be presented with one of many spectacular Vistas of the Berchtesgaden Valley and the surrounding Areas of Salzburg, Austria. Another serpentine footpath takes you up to the House itself, from there it´s only a few more meters to the Gipfelkreuz (Mountaintop Cross) and another spectacular Vista.

The Base of the Eagles Nest Mountain, just across from the Zauner Bridge( an uncompleted World War 2 bridge), has an abundance of Parking Areas. The asphalt path leads you up through the Ligarett Alpine Pasture, through the woods to the Eagles Nest road. This path was used to transport building supplies for the construction of the Eagles Nest road. Once you reach the road sign, approx 50m to the right you will find a small trail that leads off from the road to the Sappensteig. The Sappensteig is only advisable for sure footed experienced walkers. The Sappensteig leads you along the sunny side of the mountain up to the Sappenkreuz, from there the path joins the road again to the RVO Bus Turning Point and the path to the House and Mountaintop Cross.
